Striped wolffish is a marine fish from the wolffish family (Latin: Anarhichadidae). It inhabits the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean, mainly in waters from the coast of Canada to the Scandinavian Peninsula.

The striped wolffish has a distinctive elongated body, covered with small scales. On the back there are two fins, the front one with a crest-like projection. On the lower jaw there are protruding fangs, giving the fish its second name — "sea wolf".

On average, an adult specimen is 1-1.5 meters long and weighs 20-50 kg. Lifespan is 20-30 years.

The meat of the striped wolffish is white in color and has a dense texture. It is rich in beneficial substances such as B vitamins, vitamins A, D, E, K, as well as trace elements such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iodine, zinc, fluoride and others.

Striped wolffish is a valuable commercially fished species. Its meat has a pleasant taste and delicate texture, which makes it a popular ingredient in cooking.

However, as with any sea fish, striped wolffish may contain small amounts of mercury. Therefore it is recommended to consume it in moderation, especially for pregnant and nursing women, as well as for children.

Here are a few dishes that can be prepared from striped wolffish:

  • Baked striped wolffish with lemon and herbs. The wolffish fillet is sprinkled with salt, black pepper, herbs (for example, rosemary, thyme, or dill), and lemon juice. Then bake in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 20-25 minutes.
  • Fish soup with striped wolffish and vegetables. Cut the wolffish fillet into pieces, add to boiling water and cook for 10 minutes. Then add chopped vegetables (potatoes, carrots, onions) and cook for another 15 minutes. Finally season with salt, black pepper and greens to taste.
  • Fried striped wolffish with tartar sauce. The fillet is breaded in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs, then fried in a skillet with vegetable oil until golden crust. For the tartar sauce mix mayonnaise, finely chopped pickled cucumber, capers and greens.
