Sunfish is a marine fish belonging to the zinc-perch family. It inhabits the northern seas of the Pacific Ocean, occurring off the coast of Kamchatka, in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Chukchi Sea, and the Bering Sea. Sunfish prefers deep places with sandy bottoms.

The Sunfish has a rounded body covered with small scales. The back and sides are silver, and the belly is white. There are dark spots on the sides that form vertical stripes.

The Sunfish can reach lengths of up to 40 cm and weights of up to 1.5 kg. The lifespan of this fish is about 12 years.

The Sunfish feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and larvae.

This fish is valued for its tender and tasty flesh. However, it should be noted that the Sunfish can accumulate mercury in its body, so it is not recommended to eat it too often.

  1. Fried sunfish with onions and carrots. The fish should be cleaned, gutted, the head and fins removed. Then cut into pieces, salt, pepper, and leave for 10–15 minutes. Dredge the pieces in flour and fry in a skillet with heated vegetable oil until golden brown. Then add sliced onions and grated carrots. Fry for another 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  2. Stewed sunfish with potatoes. The fish should be cleaned, gutted, the head and fins removed. Cut into pieces, salt, pepper, and leave for 10–15 minutes. Peel the potatoes, cut into cubes and boil in salted water until almost done. Then add the fish to the potatoes and simmer covered over low heat for 15–20 minutes.

  3. Baked sunfish with lemon and herbs. The fish should be cleaned, gutted, the head and fins removed. Rub with salt and pepper, drizzle with lemon juice. Finely chop the greens and mix with vegetable oil. Spread over the fish and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 20–25 minutes.
