Sockeye salmon — a fish of the salmon family, one of the species of Pacific salmon. It inhabits the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, and the Sea of Japan, and forages in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean. The average size of sockeye is about 45 cm in length and a weight of about 1.5 kg.

Sockeye has a bright red flesh color due to a special carotenoid pigment that it obtains by feeding on a particular crustacean — calanoid copepods.

Sockeye is considered a valuable food product. Its flesh is rich in nutrients, such as vitamins (A, D, B-complex, niacin (B3), and K), minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, selenium), as well as unsaturated fatty acids.

Sockeye is suitable for preparing various dishes: it can be baked, fried, boiled, stewed, salted, and smoked. Dishes made from it include ukha (fish soup), cutlets, and fillings for pies.

However, it is worth remembering that, like any other fish, sockeye may contain parasites, so it is important to follow proper preparation and handling rules for fish.
